Last Updated on 20 Apr. 2020 comments (1)

Are you a heavy person looking for a new mattress? Not a problem, I’ve got a list of recommendations of mattresses ideal for heavy people.

Mattresses have weight limits and some are higher than others and I’ve found all the highest weight limits of mattress you can get in the UK.

A quick buyer’s guide first.

You’re going to want a thicker mattress, 25 cm deep and upwards, you want a firmer feel, minimum of medium-firm to keep you supported and you’ll want either pocket springs or memory foam ideally.

You will wear out your mattress faster depending on how heavy you are but a properly supported mattress will help you get the sleep you need without hurting your back.

With all that said let’s dive into my top 5 of the best mattresses for heavy people, I’ve got a summary table and then the more detailed reviews after.

Top 5 Mattresses for Heavy People

Price & Reviews

If there’s one thing a heavy person needs in a mattress it’s firmness, a really firm feel to give you plenty of support to sink into. If you are heavier it won’t feel as firm so still be really comfortable.

This mattress provides just that, extra firmness and 2000 pocket springs to keep you comfortable all night long, these are individually wrapped springs that move independetally to give you support just where you need it.

You’ve also got all natural fillnigs to keep you cool through the night with their naturally breathable properties. There’s also no memory foam so no risk of creating a divot in the mattress that you fall into every night.

Comfortable, supportive for even the heaviest frame, superbly comfortable and a very reasonable price tag.

Plus if you click the ‘Price & Reviews’ button you’ll go to Mattress Online where you can get Free next day Delivery!

2.Best Cheap Pick – Happy Beds Supreme Ortho Spring Reflex Foam Orthopaedic Extra Firm Mattress

Firmness: Extra Firm

Price & Reviews

If you need a cheap mattress then Happy Beds are the place to go for it, they offer a 5-yer guarantee on all their mattresses and you get free UK delivery for ease.

Now this one in particular is great for heavy people, it’s 25 cm thick which is on the edge of thick enough, combined with the extra-firmness of it you’ll be kept up off any bed frame. A bedframe without slats would be preferred but not essential.

It’s a single open coil spring layer, so you don’t get the same luxury feel as the above choice, but you also don’t pay as much. It’s a single sheet of springs all joined together which give the mattress a traditional bouncy feel.

This is combined with a layer of reflex foam which doesn’t trap heat the way memory foam does but isn’t as cooling as natural fillings.

Cheap, cheerful, comfortable and you can order it with free delivery. An easy pick of the best cheap mattress for heavy people.

3. Best Mattress for Heavy People With Back Pain – Sealy Posturepedic Pearl Ortho Pocket Spring Mattress

Sealy Posturepedi Pearl Ortho Pocket Spring Mattress
  • 35 stone weight limit
  • 29 Cm Deep
  • Orthopaedic Support
  • Edge-to-Edge Support
  • 5-year guarantee

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

35 stone weight limit (for the couple) is a good amount and the firm feel and 29 cm deep will be more than enough to keep you up off the bed frame and well supported.

Edge-to-edge support is especially important if you’re heavier because you want to be able to lie right up to the edge of the mattress without the mattress sagging away and you rolling onto the floor! No, you want to be able to lie right at the very edge and still be supported and comfortable.

Inside this Sealy Posturepedic is the PostureTech springs system which is twice tempered springs to give you stronger springs that distribute the weight from the heaviest parts of your body throughout the mattress. The result of which is you get pressure relief across your pressure points and your back gets the rest it needs. Ideal for proper spinal alignment across your lower back and mornings that are fresh not sore.

The orthopaedic support is exactly what you need for a bad back, extra support across the back and shoulder alongside the firmer feel to keep your spine aligned and make your mornings all the more enjoyable.

4. Best Hybrid Mattress for Heavy People – Simba Sleep

Simba Mattress Hybrid
  • 36 Stone weight limit
  • Regulates your temperature
  • 2500 pocket springs
  • 10-year guarantee
  • 100-night trial

Firmness: Medium-Firm

Price & Reviews

One of the coolest things about this mattress is it’s had 32,000 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars, that’s quite incredible really, especially since not everyone who tried it will review it, and people tend to leave reviews with something bad to say instead of something good. It means that thousands upon thousands of people have tried and loved this mattress enough to tell someone about it.

For heavy people, it’s got an 18 stone per person limit for the guarantee to hold up, which means it can hold more but they can’t guarantee it will last 10 years, which is something you may have to accept if you’re over 18 stone.

But the good thing is it’s got a trial period so you can sleep on it for several months before you have to fully commit to it, meaning you can try it out and see how it feels.

BLACK FRIDAY (2020) SALE: 35% OFF on orders over £300

There are 2500 springs inside which is a luxurious amount and the other high-quality materials leave you with a breathable combination of innerspring and foam layers that give you maximum support.

Great for back sleepers and side sleepers and OK for stomach sleepers but they’re not the best, generally stomach sleepers want to avoid foam, especially if they’re heavy sleepers.

A superb combination of material makes this an ideal hybrid mattress for heavy people.

5. Best Mattress for Heavy Couples – Leesa Sapira Mattress

Leesa Sapira Mattress
  • 42 Stone weight limit
  • 10-year warranty
  • 100-night trial
  • 1 mattress donated to charity for every 10 sold
  • Ideal for side sleepers

Firmness: Medium-Firm

Price & Reviews

This mattress has appeared quite a few times on this website now, most recently it came up as the best side sleeper mattress for heavy people.

It’s got a 21 stone weight limit per person, which when coupled with a 10-year warranty is pretty good going. A hybrid mattress with 3 layers, a top layer of comfortable breathable foam at the top, a recovery layer of memory foam that underneath that to keep you supported and comfortable. FInally the pocket springs between two stabilising foam layers.

All that together gives you a mattress that limits motion transfer with your partner so you can each move without disturbing the other, ideal for couples. And a more traditional feel with the bounce you get from an innerspring mattress.

You’ve also got superb edge to edge support so that even if you’re fed up of your partner and want some space you can move right up to the edge of the mattress and still be fully supported and comfortable.

Finally, Leesa are a really cool company who donate one mattress to charity for every 10 they sell, and so far they’ve donated 30,000 mattresses to homeless charities across UK and all over the world.

All the right ingredients for a great mattress for heavy people.

What Is The Best Type Of Mattress For Heavy People

It varies a lot depending on your personal preference, often with a mattress for a specific need it’s clearly either a memory foam mattress or a pocket spring mattress but in this case, it doesn’t actually matter. What matters more is the firmness level and the depth but I talk more about that in a bit.

Memory Foam Mattresses – These are great for those of you who experience back pain, shoulder pain, or even hip pain. Extra support and a comfortable sleeping platform, also great for couples because your partner can move and even get in or out of bed without you feeling it.

Pocket Spring Mattresses – These are the more traditional mattress, nice bounce, but also well supported with individual springs. A good choice if you don’t like memory foam really, I know some people hate it so if you don don’t worry a pocket spring mattress can still give you everything you need from your mattress.

Hybrid Mattresses – These are a combination of the two and work really well for obese people, lost of support from the memory foam with the cooling elements of the pocket springs to keep you comfortable and supported from the moment your head hits the pillow to when your alarm goes off.

What Mattress Firmness is Best For Heavy People

Firm.

Next question!

I kid, but you do want to go for a firm mattress if you’re heavier, they can withhold your body better and won’t feel as firm because you can press down heavier on them.

Medium-firm is also fine but you don’t want to go any softer than that, for instance, if you went for a soft mattress you might end up being able to feel the slats of your bed underneath!

I’ve actually got some other firm mattress recommendations if you’re interested, they’re not specifically for heavy people but if you’re not convinced on any of the ones I’ve talked about here then check them out.

Sleeping Positions and Larger People

Sleep the way you’re most comfortable, that’s what I always say. If that’s sleeping on your side then do it, if it’s on your back then carry on!

I don’t imagine you’ll be most comfortable as a stomach sleeper but if you are then power to you!

I’m not going to tell you one way is better than the other, it depends on the individual, just follow your body’s lead and sleep however you’re comfortable.

What Mattress For Heavy People Need

There are a few things you can look for generally if you’re shopping for a mattress and you’re heavier. All the mattresses here have either all or most of these features but you can bear them in mind if you don’t like any of the recommendations here, though if you don’t I demand to know why! Nah, you can do whatever I won’t be mad.

Bigger Size

If your mattress has absolute edge to edge support then this isn’t as big a factor but if it doesn’t then you’re going to want to go for a king size. This gives you more area to support you and gives you more of an area for sleeping on since the support may start to give out as you head towards the edge of the bed.

But if you have edge-to-edge support then it’s not as big a deal because you get the support you need right up to the sides of the mattress so can sleep on it anywhere not just in the middle.

Thicker Depth

I’m sure the last thing you want is to lie on your bed and be able to feel the bed slats underneath you right? It doesn’t sound comfortable and I can tell you it isn’t. So if you’re heavier you want to get a thicker mattress to prevent that happening alongside the firmer feel.

More than 25 cm is where you want to be, 18-22 cm is just too thin and won’t last very well compared to a thicker 25 or even 30 cm depth. This is something you really don’t want to avoid so keep it nice and thick and you can keep yourself comfortable.

The Right Base

Another thing you don’t want is the creak and snapping of wood underneath you when you flump into bed, basically, you need the right frame and base for your mattress.

Ideally, this involves stainless steel rather than wood if you want a slatted frame and possibly even extra legs depending on how heavy you are. Think sturdy and you’ll be on the right track.

Divan bases are another good choice, they also make your mattress feel a little softer so can be quite comfortable.

Minimal slats made from MDF just won’t cut it and are a recipe for disaster.

Other Mattresses for Heavy People

Ghost Bed

Ghost Bed Mattress For Overweight People
  • 53 stone weight limit
  • Cooling features
  • Available from Single to King
  • Great for back pain

Firmness: Medium-Firm

Price & Reviews

Ghost bed have an industry-leading weight limit on their mattress of 750 lbs, which is about 53 stone and 335 kg. Now that’s for both people who are in the bed but it should be more than enough to keep you comfortable even if you are heavier. This is the weight limit for the guarantee to work, if you’re heavier than that it won’t disintegrate, it just won’t have a valid warranty.

Memory foam tends to be more pliable so it doesn’t necessarily hold heavier people as well so it’s quite something that the Ghost Bed has managed.

It’s a bed-in-a-box that’s suitable for back sleepers and side sleepers, it comes rolled up in a box so you just lift it to the room you want and cut it free from the plastic. When you do this their will be a weird smell but give it 24 hours to air and that starts to disappear. It might be a few weeks before it’s totally gone but it does disappear.

Memory foam can be on the hot side but this has a special layer of latex foam that works to increase airflow underneath you and help heat escape leaving you at a comfortable temperature.

One of the cool things about memory foam is that it works to keep you still through the night by supporting you, and when that happens you sleep deeper and wake up more refreshed. Pretty cool right?

All-round a great mattress for overweight people, the largest weight limit of any mattress and great memory foam support to ease your back and leave you sleeping soundly.

I’ve got 5 more mattresses that are great for heavy people, so if you didn’t like any of the ones above you might find something you like here.

Rest Assured Darlington 1400 Pocket Latex Mattress

Rest Assured Darlington 1400 Pocket Latex Mattress
  • 31.5 stone limit
  • Cotton filling
  • Air vents in the side
  • 30 cm deep
  • 5-year guarantee

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

Not the highest weight limit at 31.5 combined stone but the 30 cm deep and firm feel does lend itself to being a cracking mattress for heavy people. Latex has some bounce to it and as you move around the mattress reacts to the shape of your body for maximum stability.

1400 pocket springs is also a reasonable amount for a firm mattress and the work to provide each part of your body as you need it. Plus the cotton fillings regulate body temperature which can prevent overheating and keep you cool through the night.

Doubly so because you have air vents in the side that let hot air escape and keep the air circulating underneath you for a more relaxing sleep. Finally, you don’t need to flip this mattress, just occasional turning (there are handles built-in) which is good because the 30 cm dep is quite awkward to lift.

Made in the UK, the Darlington mattress has a chemical-free cover that resists mould and dust mites and keeps your mattress fresh. Plus it has a 5-year guarantee, everything you could want from a latex mattress.

Hyder Backcare Ultimate 2000 Mattress

Hyder Backcare Ultimate 2000 Mattress
  • 26 cm deep
  • Orthopaedic support
  • 5-year warranty
  • Double-sided

Firmness: Extra Firm

Price & Reviews

One of the things I like about this mattress is that it’s double-sided which means you can flip it any time you want for a fresh new mattress feel. This can be great if you’re overweight and can start to leave a divot where you sleep, just slip it over and you’ve got a fresh new firm side to lie on.

The extra-firm feel also helps keep it feeling new and comfortable for years to come. Inside you’ve got 2000 pocket springs which is a good amount for a comfortable feel and an extra deep wool layer which works great to help prevent overheating and keep you cool all night long.

Although it’s aimed for those who suffer back pain it can be used by anyone, back pain or no if you’re overweight and like a firmer feel then this is the mattress for you.

It’s quite good for couples with no-roll-together but it won’t be as good as some of the other memory foam mattresses mention earlier in the article.

Sleepeezee Ortho 800 Pocket Mattress

 Sleepeezee Ortho 800 Pocket Mattress
  • Cheap price
  • 5-year guarantee
  • 24 cm deep
  • Orthopaedic support
  • Breathable cover

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

No list is complete without a good budget mattress, and for this, it’s the Sleepeezee Ortho 800, a great price while still being made with pocket springs and offering a firm feel with orthopaedic support, good for those with a little extra body weight.

It’s got a spring count of 800 which is the lower end but the fact it’s pocket springs at all is a win in my book, a real treat for a budget mattress.

It’s also 24 cm deep which while being slightly below my recommended 25 cm is still thick enough for most overweight people to sleep comfortably on.

The cover is Demask which is breathable and there are air vents in the side to let hot air escape and keep you cool through the night.

Finally, the polyester fillings inside work to keep the price down while making it durable and long-lasting which is why you get the 5-year guarantee. A great, UK made, affordable mattress for heavy people

Rest Assured Boxgrove 1400 Pocket Natural Mattress

Rest Assured Boxgrove 1400 Pocket Natural Mattress
  • 27 cm deep
  • 5-year guarantee
  • Silk and wool filling
  • Air vents in side

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

Rest Assured have nailed it with the Boxgrove, a great price and top-notch materials. The top layer is the comfort layer made of silk which is lightweight and luxurious for a really nice top layer to complement the overall firm feel, ideal because it adds more comfort to an overall firmer mattress.

Inside is wool which I’ve talked about a lot already and works to dissipate heat alongside the air vents that prevent your sleep getting disturbed when you start wrestling the duvet off to try and cool down.

1400 pocket springs is reasonable, not the most luxurious but plenty to keep you comfortable and supported all through the night.

You don’t need to turn this mattress but again you could benefit from turning it occasionally to keep your sleep surface fresh and supportive for longer, which is especially important for larger people.

Handmade in the UK and free 24-hour delivery, so if you need a new mattress now this could be the one for you.

Tuft & Springs Fairmont 2000 Pocket Natural Mattress

Tuft & Springs Fairmont 2000 Pocket Natural Mattress
  • 30 cm deep
  • 5-year guarantee
  • Silk, wool, and cotton filling
  • Breathable Demask Cover

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

Orthopaedic quality and made in the UK it’s similar to the Rest Assured above but thicker and featuring cashmere fillings alongside a higher spring count of 2000.

You’ve also got the Damask cover which adds an extra layer of breathability to stop you getting too hot which works well with the air vents and the wool fillings.

You should be flipping this mattress occasionally which can be awkward because of the 30 cm depth but manageable with the turning handles built into the side.

Relyon Vienna Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress

Relyon Vienna Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress
  • 27 cm deep
  • Wool and Cotton Filling
  • Hybrid mattress
  • 8-year guarantee

Firmness: Firm

Price & Reviews

The Relyon Vienna Ortho is a hybrid mattress made up of 1000 pocket springs and a layer of reflex foam which helps prevent you from rolling to one side or into the middle of the bed. The result of which is a more restful sleep because you don’t end up rolling around as much.

It’s a perfect choice for those conscious of having a clean fresh bed, the foam is sterilised and dust-free ad the cotton and wool are both naturally anti-microbial so you don’t have to worry about dust mites or any other germs making their way into the bed.

The firm feel is, of course, great for heavier sleepers and the support layer of foam will help give your back that extra rest, exactly what you need when you’re looking for the right mattress.

Lastly, you’ve got an 8-year guarantee which shows the durability and longevity of this mattress. A great investment for a new mattress a good night’s sleep.

Conclusion

You made it! This was a hefty article so good job on making it to the bottom. If you still aren’t sure I’d go with the Ghost Bed I recommended at the very beginning, a great choice for all heavy sleepers who want to sleep soundly all night.

And if you’re not inspired by any of these mattress reviews then make sure you look for a thicker mattress with a firmer feel so it gives you the support you need and will last long enough to be worth the investment.
